You've heard of Reiki, but did you know that there are different styles?
Typically, when people speak of Reiki they are referring to the Usui system of Energy Healing. The Usui Shiki Ryoho system was the original form of Reiki founded in Japan by Mikao Usui over a century ago. The Japanese word "Reiki" can be translated as "Spiritually Guided Universal Life Energy" and the Usui system is a way of working with energy to address the whole person. Rei- means 'the Higher Power' and Ki- means 'life force energy'.
This form of Energy Healing utilizes the practitioner as a conduit, channeling vital lifeforce energy (i.e. Prana, Chi, Qi) through them to assist the recipient in healing on an energetic, physical, mental, emotional , and spiritual level. The word "healing" in this sense is used to define the intention to regain harmony and balance in one's entire body, mind, and soul. There are many benefits of Reiki, including physical relief of pain, stress management, trauma recovery, mental health support, and emotional freeedom.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an Energy Healing technique that revitalizes the universal lifeforce energy in the individual. Universal lifeforce energy is often referred to as Prana in the Vedic sciences that originated in India, as Chi in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Qi in Japanese Medicine. The original Usui system utilizes four distinct symbols or techniques to harness and influence this lifeforce energy for specific purposes. There are three levels in the Usui system, culminating in the Reiki Master level. Reiki as Energy Healing does not involve any religion or assume any dogma. It does not deplete the practitioner in any way, as the energy that is being utilized is not their own. The Practitioner is simply a channel for the lifeforce energy to be directed through.
Since the development of traditional Reiki, it has evolved into newer systems and passed down through different branches that stem from the original lineage. These newer systems require the Practitioner to achieve their Master level training in the Usui system before they can receive these additional trainings. Each training involves an attunement from the Reiki Teacher where the new symbols are received into the Practitioner's Energetic Anatomy, and it is said that the matrix of these symbols are integrated on a soul level and assimilated into their physical DNA. Any traditional Eastern Medical system teaches us that our Energetic Anatomy is intimately connected to our physical body. Therefore, the symbols and techniques become a part of you and imbue you with the ability to properly wield them.
The evolution of these newer Reiki systems include (but are not limited to) Karuna Ki, Holy Fire, Shambala, Kundalini, Sekehem (or Seichim), and Tera Mai Reiki. I do not know much about these other systems, so this article will focus only on Karuna Ki Reiki. You can learn more about the history of Reiki and it's newer forms here.
How is Karuna Ki Reiki different?
The word Karuna is a Sanskrit term that translates as "Compassion." This style of Reiki was originally channeled by two women, then eventually further developed by William Lee Rand (founder of the International Center for Reiki Training) with the help of his students. It has a higher vibrational approach than the Usui Reiki system, and the training includes many meditations with Ascended Masters and Archangels. As the Chinese Goddess Quan Yin is the embodiment of Compassion, she is the perfect representation of this style of Reiki. There are typically two levels in this system, consisting of four symbols for each level (although some trainings may differ in their approach).
The eight symbols take on more spiritual evolutionary concepts including healing cellular memory, addictions, trauma, relationships, and more. The underlying intention behind this system is unconditional love, learning to forgive and love yourself, as well as others. This compassion, unconditional love, and spiritual evolution extends beyond the practitioner and recipient to include healing Mother Earth and the collective at large. These symbols expand upon the four Usui Master symbols to utilize a broader spectrum of healing techniques.
The most intriguing and perhaps the best part of this style of Reiki is it's ability to repair one's Karma and provide a deeper level of soul healing. Some of the symbols even take on more Sanskrit names, such as Shanti and Om. This Vedic amalgamation is what really culminated my work as a Yoga Teacher, Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Reiki Master. The basic principle behind this style of Reiki is the connection to (and becoming) the embodiment of Compassion for healing both oneself and others, and then extending that compassion to all of creation. It is a heart- centered healing method that empowers you to connect to the Divine Heart of the Universe (however you define divinity).
What you can expect from a session with me:
The beauty of Energy Work is that it can also be performed at a distance. Energy is all pervasive, and therefore you do not need to be present to receive Reiki. Distance Reiki is the safest holistic therapy you can receive during a global pandemic!
Before your scheduled appointment, I will send you the paperwork to fill out electronically. This consists of an intake form that also doubles as the consent waiver. For the foreseeable future, all sessions will be offered virtually. You will also be sent the link to virtual Telehealth meeting room when you receive your paperwork. At the time of the appointment, I will conduct a brief consultation to go over your paperwork.
You will then be instructed to make yourself comfortable with the option to end the virtual meeting. I may suggest something to listen to while you relax, such as a Guided Meditation or Spa Music. After the session, I will send another follow-up email with after care instructions and any other pertinent information. This will also give you the opportunity to ask any additional questions or provide any welcome feedback.
It is highly recommended that you treat this time as you would an in-person session, preventing any interruptions and allowing yourself the full time to receive and then integrate everything after. It is not uncommon to experience different tangible sensations, visuals, or other phenomena during the Reiki treatment. Some people are more sensitive to feeling energy than others, and it is also totally normal to not feel anything at all. Please be aware that it is also not uncommon to experience some discomfort afterwards, it may take your body time to adjust after energetic blockages have been removed and the healing work is being integrated.
If you have any questions or concerns prior to scheduling your appointment online, please reach out! I am here to support you to the best of my ability. Namaste!
